Welcome to Hired. 👋🏻
Pumped you’ve stumbled across this page and welcome to Hired. written by Evan Hughes (me).
This Substack is for marketers trying to figure out what’s next.
Could be getting hired. Could be getting paid. Could be getting out of a role that’s draining the life out of you.
I write about all of it - marketing, layoffs, burnout, weird interview loops, consulting wins leadership changes, all of it. The stuff we usually vent about in DMs.
I don’t hold back. I share what I hear, what I’ve lived through and what’s happening behind the scenes.
If you’re navigating a career shift, building something on your own, or just need a little clarity, you’ll probably feel at home here.
A little about me
In high school, I cleaned offices. In college, I served tables to cover tuition. That kind of work teaches you a lot. How to read people. How to keep things moving. How to bring some calm to chaos. It also made me curious - about people, behavior, and what actually drives action.
After school, I taught myself Google Ads on YouTube and landed my first marketing job at Walgreens. From there, I moved into sales at Microsoft, then strategy at AWS. I got a front-row seat to how big companies make decisions and where things start to break when they grow too fast.
For the past 15 years, I’ve been helping B2B companies figure out what actually works.
But this space - Hired came from a different place.
I’ve quit jobs. I’ve had shitty bosses. I’ve consulted. I’ve questioned what’s next. I’ve struggled to find work. I’ve watched great marketers get stuck, overlooked, or burned out because no one helped them figure out their next move.
So I built the kind of space I wish existed back then.
Today, I lead marketing at Refine Labs and run the Hired community on the side.
This newsletter is where I share stories, lessons, and honest takes from both worlds.
Glad you found your way here.
